Hillwalking Journal

Hearts for Heroes
The event is a 12-hour walking or running challenge across a 29-mile section of the picturesque Southern Upland Way. There are three finish points available - bronze (12 miles), silver (21 miles) and gold (29 miles), so that participants of all levels of fitness can aim for a target that suits them. The challenge is being held in aid of rugby charity Hearts & Balls and veterans’ charity, Poppyscotland. All funds raised will go to help injured rugby players as well as veterans and their families living in Scotland. The 2009 inaugural event saw over 500 people take part, raising a massive £244,961.

A mention has to go to 105 Regt RA (v) who will be sending two teams on this intrepid mission so best of luck to all taking part.

Is that the time already!
It's been a while since this site has been updated partly because of my own work commitments but also because I needed to do some hill walking in. There have been some problems with the site as well namely the registration page. I am now happy to report that new users can now register to use the site. And as always the site is and will always be free to use.

Website Migration Complete!
British Hillwalking was successfully migrated to a coldfusion server platform this week. The reason for this migration was to further enhance the functionality of the site and to facilitate a major database upgrade. There are a couple of new tools incorporated into the site as well and these include:

  • Implementation of google maps and google earth to the map views.
  • Dynamic charting is available through the logbook.
  • Facilities for creating PDF's from users logbook entries.

Further developments will include the following over the coming weeks:

  • CSV export
  • GPS Datafile Imports

Walkers at risk of a menace in the undergrowth
Visitors to the countryside are being warned of an increased risk of contracting Lyme disease, amid a sharp rise in the tick population. With the  warm spring bringing out walkers, cyclists and riders. the Health Protection Agency is advising people to take precautions against tick bites particularly when visiting woods, heaths and moorland – and even suburban parks. To find out more information about Lyme Disease and how to recognise the symptoms we have made available an information leaflet from Lyme Disease Action.
